05-11-2024 10:30 05-11-2024 11:00 Europe/Madrid How Do Urban Resilience and Talent Retention Connect?

Decades of government and philanthropic policies have facilitated economically stagnant zones where people measure their success by how far they get away. This talent-extraction paradigm makes them far more vulnerable to real estate speculation and displacement, and removes individuals with spending power, day to day examples of success, and the investment and financial acumen needed to build local economies.

05-11-2024 10:30 05-11-2024 10:50 Europe/Madrid Centering “Smartness:” the Challenges and Opportunities of Doing Ethics for “Smart” Environments

It has been established that “smartness” is a form of branding to market cities as modern, innovative, and efficient. Submerged under these overarching values are several others that depend on who is wielding the terminology, ranging from sustainability to entrepreneurship. Smartness rarely centers low-tech common-sense solutions or meeting the demands of those most vulnerable in society. This talk unearths what we mean by smartness and considers the inherent challenges of making smart city technology “ethical.” Finally, it addresses initial steps to make “doing ethics” easier.

05-11-2024 10:45 05-11-2024 11:30 Europe/Madrid Talents for Tomorrow: How Local Governments Can Address Emerging Challenges?

European cities and regions face an array of new challenges, including climate change, advancements in artificial intelligence, and issues related to energy and water management, among others. City-to-city and region-to-region cooperation has proven to be an effective way to identify and shape solutions to common challenges, circulate know-how, and foster the institutional development of local governments. However, the ability to fully capitalise on and harness the potential of such cooperation will depend heavily on today’s strategies in developing and cultivating knowledgeable talents who besides being equipped with the right background of knowledge and expertise are also capable and possess the right skills on International and European affairs for influencing, shaping, and implementing impactful policies. Building tomorrow’s talents for municipalities and regions requires support and cooperation through a multistakeholder approach. Supply chains have proven vulnerable, as evidenced by events such as the extreme drought in the Panama Canal early this year, the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis in the Red Sea, and more. With extreme weather patterns and rising sea levels increasingly linked to climate change, alongside political crises and geopolitical conflicts, there is a growing concern over how these issues will impact international maritime transit. In light of these challenges, what tools can we leverage to mitigate these effects? What best practices should be embraced? Are there disruptive solutions on the horizon to minimize disturbances?

Melati will share the vision, brought through a fresh perspective of young changemakers who already reshaping communities by their actions are. Envision cities that choose for better air, create less (plastic) waste, greener in streets and buildings and embrace the circular economy. And that change comes starts with education, in the classroom. Melati will share the inspiring story where she at the age of 12 started with Bye Bye Plastic Bags and her home island of Bali. Years later started the circular economy principle through the social enterprise Mountain Mamas, who created bags from donated, pre-loved material. And recently kicked off a e-learning platform with educational programs for Youth by youth called YOUTHTOPIA. Melati is the living proof that true change can start when youth turn their passion into purpose. And their ideas into Action. The cities of tomorrow demand the courage to act today, allow youth the lead the way with you.
