An exclusive global gathering of mayors and deputy mayors dedicated to exploring the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in urban governance. This event will provide a unique platform for municipal leaders from around the world to share insights, strategies, and best practices on leveraging AI to enhance city management, improve public services, and drive sustainable development.

It has been established that “smartness” is a form of branding to market cities as modern, innovative, and efficient. Submerged under these overarching values are several others that depend on who is wielding the terminology, ranging from sustainability to entrepreneurship. Smartness rarely centers low-tech common-sense solutions or meeting the demands of those most vulnerable in society. This talk unearths what we mean by smartness and considers the inherent challenges of making smart city technology “ethical.” Finally, it addresses initial steps to make “doing ethics” easier.

Being Human in Digital Cities by Myria Georgiou delves into how technology reshapes urban life, advocating for human-centered cities rooted in social justice. Digitally Invisible by Nicol Turner Lee highlights the growing digital divide in America, sharing stories from the emerging digital underclass and calling for equitable tech access. Join us to discuss how both authors envision a more inclusive, digital future.

This session aims to showcase the Industrial Doctorate program as a bridge for technology transfer between academia and industry. UPC research groups will present their research lines and potential industrial applications, facilitating companies in identifying strategic areas for doctoral research projects. The Spain Pavilion organize this workshop to explore the challenges faced by Tokyo, Kyoto, and Yokohama in terms of digital transformation and green transition. A key aspect of Japanese public policies is the adoption of practices and technologies that promote sustainability, where collaboration with private companies providing innovative solutions plays a crucial role. In this regard, we will also have NISSAN, TOYOTA KONIQ ALPHA, INC, and KPMG.

The ubiquitous presence of cameras and affordable edge computing, combined with remarkable advances in vision-based AI, present a wealth of new business opportunities. Any process historically monitored by the trained human eye can now be efficiently automated at scale using vision and AI solutions. In this talk, Maurits will first provide several examples of novel vision and AI systems, showcasing how monitoring tasks can be automated at scale, with cameras and AI models working together as “smart sensors” for various business applications. After presenting these examples, Maurits will detail how to build such vision and AI applications, outlining the construction of edge AI vision pipelines. Finally, he will introduce the tools provided by Network Optix to facilitate the easy scaling of innovative vision and AI solutions.

Shenzhen has always been a gathering place for innovative technology and high-tech industries. To further enhance the promotion and application of smart city solutions, we have organized this conference under the theme “Digital Shenzhen, City of Technology”. LDT CitiVERSE EDIC is progressing on two tracks: on the one hand in building the digital infrastructure around the Digital Twins and on the other hand in finalizing the establishment of the legal framework as well as increasing the number of adhering Member States. The session covers both aspects with a focus on the development of the EU LDT toolbox as the main asset of the future digital infrastructure around the Digital Twins in Europe (DDP).

As French cities and metropolitan areas must define an environmental strategy for digital policies by 2025, how are they addressing digital policies with citizens ? In the context of deploying AI in public services, how cities and metropolitan areas are making digital issues a matter of public debate ? For which use cases ? Madrid City Council presents its technological platform. The aim is to provide Madrid with the necessary technological solutions to implement a smart city model, through a platform that centralises the information and management of the city's public service contracts and provides the technological basis for the development and creation of the new services that the city will need in the coming years.

Six finalists amongst all startups present at SCEWC Innovation Playground will be competing for the Urban Innovators Startup Award. The session consist of pitches by the selected finalists, and an award ceremony.

Autonomous vehicles still need progress towards algorithms for perception in all-environmental conditions (e.g.bad weather). Data collection in such conditions needs complex equipment hard to set-up. At UPC-CD6 (https://www.cd6.upc.edu) we have built an instrumented car with multiple imaging modes (3D+2D) for mapping and sensor testing uses, and to build a publc dataset of driving scenarios to develop DL perception algorithms based on data fusion

This panel session will explore the experiences of cities and technical partners, discussing the challenges of deploying new technologies or governance structures at the neighborhood scale. Participants from the UP2030 project (Horizon Europe), will address integration hurdles and social acceptance issues. The session will also examine city-wide upscaling opportunities, highlighting strategies for overcoming barriers and fostering transitions.

Discussions will focus on how the 'International Guidelines on People-Centred Smart Cities' can contribute to more inclusive smart city development, as they are developed upon the request of 193 Member States. The event emphasizes the strategic convergence of global frameworks with local leadership, particularly highlighting the critical roles city leaders play in driving urban digital transformation, supported by practical examples.

Snap4City manages multiple domains in the city/area operating system enabling Digital Twin, operation, management, plan and strategic views for mobility and transport, tourism, security, etc. Cities are rapidly transforming their services to address societal and environmental challenges. Verticals are progressively replaced by solutions capable of exploiting a huge range of data channels, via Artificial Intelligence, and cross exploiting data.

This keynote presentation highlights how different municipalities are moving towards building sovereign urban intelligence (AI) through the 4th edition of smart city index report published bi-annually. The report is perhaps the only comparative study launched and maintained by a neutral institution to foresee how AI impacts on current smart city practices and future perspectives. The report also added other perspectives to support AI transformation. The longitudinal view since 2017, based on a temporary series of bench-marking data, will provide invaluable insights based on the analysis of 50 cities around the globe.

When it comes to climate change and environmental impact, will Artificial Intelligence solve more problems than it creates? AI's huge energy and water requirements have caused some of the biggest technology companies in the world to miss their climate targets, a problem that will likely only worsen in the near to medium term. Yet AI is also helping to improve productivity, identify efficiencies, and support innovation, all of which we need to achieve our net zero targets. This keynote presents a toolkit for developing four pillars of digital democracy –democratic governance, participatory citizenship, digital diversity and rights to information. The toolkit charts a collection of instruments, measures and guidelines to empower marginal social groups. It thus enables those dispossessed of the public sphere of the city and the digital realm alike, to claim, inhabit and thrive in both urban and digital spaces.

How can smart cities improve well-being and life satisfaction of citizens? Takehiko will present a new smart city policy design approach that focuses on both subjective and objective well-being of citizens as a basis of designing smart city polities. This one of the kind approach was developed by Smart City Institute Japan and has been extended to use in about 100 cities in Japan as part of the national digital transformation strategy to revitalize regional economy and society.

What obstacles arise in urban environments that hinder digital equality and inclusion, and how can cities address them? In what ways are local governments promoting digital equity and social justice to ensure equal access to technology? This roundtable will explore the innovative strategies that cities are employing to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that all residents have equitable access to technology, digital literacy, and the opportunities they facilitate.

The "Sport&Smart Cities: The Technological Connection for a Sustainable Urban Future" event will focus on the relationship between sports and technology, highlighting the advancements from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It will include discussions on technological innovation in infrastructure, mobility, sustainability, and social and economic impact. Additionally, companies like Atos will explain their role in the digital transformation of cities.
